The Super Sentai costumes play a huge role in the pop culture impact of each season, from the simplicity of Himitsu Sentai Gorenger’s suits to the divisive Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger helmets. Starting in 1975, the Super Sentai franchise consists of 48 TV shows, dozens of movies, and hundreds of “Rangers.” Although it is difficult not to associate Super Sentai with Power Rangers, some of the best costumes featured in the Japanese shows were never brought into the American adaptation.

The best Power Rangers costumes include a few original creations, such as Lightspeed Rescue’s Titanium Ranger and the Mighty MorphinPower Rangers movie suits. That said, even the American-made Power Rangers costumes borrow from SuperSentai on some level, as seen with the Cosmic Fury suits and their Ryusoulger helmets. What truly defines the Sentai franchise in terms of costumes is the plurality of it all, with each season bringing something different to the saga’s impressive legacy.

Some Power Rangers terms, such as Zords and Morphers, do not necessarily apply to Super Sentai. Others, like “Ranger,” can work within the context of the Japanese series.

10 Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger

(2012-2013)

The full Power Rangers Dino Charge team in formation

There was only so much Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger could do when it came to innovating dinosaur-inspired suits after Zyuranger and Abaranger. Even so, the Kyoryuger costumes look great, with each Ranger spotting a different helmet. The suits follow a relatively convoluted pattern, though, and they might have been better with a more streamlined design. One of the most interesting things about Kyoryuger is the number of heroes featured on the show, which allowed the series to feature Ranger colors that do not appear very often, such as Gold and Purple. The movie-exclusive Deathryuger arguably had the coolest Kyoryuger suit.

9 Gosei Sentai Dairanger

(1993-1994)

Green, Red, Yellow, Blue, and White Dairangers

Although the Dairanger costumes do not feel as inspired as those of other entries in the saga, there is a level of elegance to them. The smaller helmets give the Rangers a sleeker look, which makes the Kibaranger look even cooler compared to the rest of his team. It is difficult not to imagine what Power Rangers would have looked like had Mighty Morphin season 2 used all of the Dairanger suits rather than just the Kibaranger one. That said, Tommy Oliver’s Power Rangers costume based on Dairanger fit into the Zyuranger aesthetic surprisingly well.

8 Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger

(2001-2002)

The six Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger rangers posing together

As far as Super Sentai shows with an animal motif go, Gaoranger has one of the best sets of costumes in the franchise. Gaoranger, which was adapted into Wild Force, features a core team of five heroes, each of whom represents an animal spirit. Therefore, the Red Ranger’s helmet is designed after a lion; the Yellow Ranger’s helmet is designed after an eagle, and so on. The gold stripes add a nice touch to the costumes, and the level of detail in each helmet is fantastic. The White Ranger’s design, with details in pink, is a highlight of the team.

7 Choriki Sentai Ohranger

(1995-1996)

The Choriki Sentai Ohranger helmets are some of the most divisive when it comes to Super Sentai costumes. Although having a giant star in front of a Ranger’s helmet looks undoubtedly cool, it raises the question of how much the character can see under that visor. This is even trickier when it comes to the Yellow Ranger, whose visor is actually a pair of visors, none of which seem to match the characters’ eye line. Functionality aside, the Ohranger suits always look good on screen. Interestingly, Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger is drawing comparisons to Ohranger due to the not-so-practical helmets.

6 Mirai Sentai Timeranger

(2000-2001)

A portal separating Timeranger's Red Rangers from Pink, Yellow, Blue, and Green

With a vibrant color scheme and creative helmets, Timeranger’s suits make a strong impact whenever they show up on screen. The “helmet mouth” is a divisive design choice regardless of the season, but it cannot be denied that it is part of the franchise’s identity. Everything about Timeranger has to tie into the show’s futurist aesthetic, which is why it makes sense for the helmets to look a bit more different compared to other seasons. The patterns on the chest, one for each Ranger, are great additions that put the Timeranger suits above many other suits in the saga.

5 Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger

(2002-2003)

Power Rangers Ninja Storm's core Rangers

The simplicity of the Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger costumes is what makes them great. Hurricaneger was one of the first Sentai to start with three core heroes only – the Red, Yellow, and Blue Rangers. The three main Rangers would then be joined by the Gouraigers, who looked even better than the protagonists thanks to their shoulder shields. Lastly, the Shurikenger, who joins at a later point, has one of the best character designs in all of Super Sentai. The patterns around the helmets, all of which come in the color gold, are different for each Ranger and elevate their suits.

4 Mahou Sentai Magiranger

(2005-2006)

Capes may not be the most common design choice for Super Sentai costumes, but Mahou Sentai Magiranger made them work. The capes helped to convey how different this new team of heroes was from previous characters. Magic was now at the center of the story, which is why the Magiranger suits had to have an ethereal look to them. With arguably the prettiest helmets in the franchise, Magiranger is an example of how creative Super Sentai can be, and how the saga can always reinvent itself in terms of costumes. The battle modes and weapons were also incredible.

3 Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger

(1992-1993)

Nostalgia will always play a significant role in analyzing Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger. Neither the then newly-born Power Rangers show nor the Super Sentai franchise would ever be the same after Mighty Morphin, and much of the success of the American show comes from how great the Zyuranger costumes were. Simple but impactful, the Zyuranger suits featured a now-iconic color scheme that would be used in many other seasons – Red, Black, Yellow, Pink, Blue, and Green. The helmets are elegant, each Ranger feels like an extension of their dino mechas, and even their civilian clothes are fashionable.

2 Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger

(2023)

The King-ohgers standing together

Super Sentai has changed a lot since the 1970s, and the King-Ohger costumes perfectly illustrate it. Rather than the usual spandex, the King-Ohger suits feel like body armor. Although they have a plastic look to them, there is a cinematic feel to the King-Ohger suits. The color scheme is very interesting, with the team featuring Purple and White Rangers in addition to the more common colors. The visors feel alive, and the swords look like a natural extension of the suit. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that King-Ohger will ever be adapted into a new Power Rangers series.

1 Bakuryu Sentai Abaranger

(2003-2004)

The Abarangers standing together

From the original trio to AbareBlack and AbareKiller, Abaranger has the best costumes in all of the Super Sentai shows. Released 10 years after Zyuranger, Abaranger is a love letter to one of the franchise’s most iconic motifs – dinosaurs. However, as iconic as the Zyuranger suits are, the Abaranger costumes are virtually perfect. The Rangers feel like human forms of their signature dinosaurs, and the suits look good both in daylight and night scenes. The white patterns around the arms and legs are both elegant and effective. AbareBlack and AbareKiller look even better, with different details in gold and black.
