Bong Joon-ho’s science fiction film Mickey 17 has a new release date. As the director’s first film since the critically acclaimed Parasite, which won Best Picture at the 92nd Academy Awards, Mickey 17 has been highly anticipated. It also features a star-studded cast including Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. It was originally scheduled to be released on March 29, 2024, but due to production delays from the strikes in 2023, it was pulled from the release calendar.
According to Warner Bros. Pictures, Mickey 17 will now be released in theaters on January 31, 2025. It has also been confirmed that the film will be available in IMAX theaters. In Mickey 17‘s place, Warner Bros. has slated Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the next installment in the Monsterverse, for a theatrical release on March 29.
Why Mickey 17’s New Release Date Is A Good Thing
With Dune: Part Two releasing on March 1, Mickey 17 would’ve only hit theaters less than a month later. It might have struggled to stand out and attract general audiences so soon after the sci-fi spectacle of Dune: Part Two, which will also be heavily featured in IMAX theaters. Mickey 17 is adapted from Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey7, but it does not have the same place in pop culture as Dune, adapted from Frank Herbert’s beloved 1965 novel.
In January 2025, Mickey 17 will stand out more as a visually dazzling science-fiction film, and as one of the first big movies of the year. The only other major theatrical release currently scheduled for January 2025 is Paddington in Peru, set for January 17. While the threequel is expected to do well, its family-friendly focus will not conflict with the darker science-fiction elements of Mickey 17, which tells the story of an “expendable” human employee named Mickey Barnes (Pattinson) sent to help colonize an ice planet, with multiple iterations of Mickey dying and new bodies needing to be generated.
The new release date also ensures that time can be taken to ensure that Mickey 17 is a project worthy of Bong’s stellar direction. Given the long wait since Parasite‘s release in 2019, it would be disappointing for the director’s followup film to not be of the same quality. Instead of rushing it for 2024, the 2025 release date means that Mickey 17 has a better chance of living up to the hype that has preceded it.
