Rebel Moon 2 Is Already A Career First For Zack Snyder After Multiple DC Universe Movies

Zack Snyder is a very accomplished director, and Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver will afford him an accolade that he surprisingly hasn’t already earned. Snyder spent many years heavily involved with the DCEU movie franchise. As well as directing several comic book adaptations, he also earned writing and producing credits. His era of DC cinema is affectionately known as the “Snyderverse” and the Rebel Moon franchise is once more allowing him to flex his shared-universe muscles.

Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire landed on Netflix in December 2023 and was met with mixed reviews. Although it’s been praised for its visual aspects, the similarities between Rebel Moon and the Star Wars original trilogy have drawn criticism. For all of its ups and downs, Snyder is already looking way beyond the coming Rebel Moon sequel, but his return to direct the cast of Rebel Moon: Part Two: The Scargiver is already set to enhance his career more than some may realize.

Rebel Moon Will Be The First Proper Sequel That Snyder Has Directed

Snyder’s DCEU follow-ups don’t quite fit the bill

For all of his achievements in the movie industry, Snyder still hasn’t directed a movie that can be considered a true sequel. So far, his main role would seem to be getting franchises started and then taking a slightly more secondary role as a producer or something similar. Although he has directed DC movies that fall later in a continuity’s timeline, those installments are more akin to crossovers than they are to actual sequels. For instance, Snyder is credited as the director for 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as well as Justice League and Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Those movies would be better described as a crossover event than a follow-up to a previous movie. The closest comparison would be the MCU’s 2012 movie, The Avengers. All three movies are technically sequels, but none are continuing the events of one specific film. This type of movie is more about the excitement of certain characters coming together than furthering individual narratives, which is where The Scargiver differs. The second Rebel Moon movie is a direct sequel to the first and Zack Snyder has directed them both.

Although Snyder’s name is heavily associated with a certain branch of the franchise, versions of the DC universe existed for decades before his involvement. He may have put his stamp on the aesthetic of the movies, but the stories themselves are all based on characters from DC Comics. Rebel Moon is a new property created by Zack Snyder. As a result, his involvement has been even greater than it was with DC. When it’s considered that DC truly cannot cut ties with the Snyderverse despite the director’s departure, it shows how much control Snyder has over his new project.

Being the creator of the franchise gives Snyder even greater reign over which movies he directs. The first two Rebel Moon movies have been written by Snyder as well as directed. So, Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver may be the only first proper sequel directed by Zack Snyder, but further installments could add to his tally.
