Summary

  • Foster finds working with Gen Z annoying due to their relaxed work ethic and lack of attention to grammar and spelling.
  • Despite her issues, Foster reaches out to young actresses to help guide them through the challenges of Hollywood.
  • Foster believes that young actors need to learn how to relax and be themselves, rather than succumbing to the pressure of being the protagonist.

Academy Award winner and Hollywood icon Jodie Foster has some issues with working with those in the ‘Gen Z’ generation. Considered to be those born during the late 1990s and early 2000s, Foster described working with Gen Z-ers as “really annoying, especially in the workplace,” taking umbrage with the work ethic that she has so far experienced.

“They’re like, ‘Nah, I’m not feeling it today, I’m gonna come in at 10:30 a.m.’ Or, like, in emails, I’ll tell them this is all grammatically incorrect, did you not check your spelling? And they’re like, ‘Why would I do that, isn’t that kind of limiting?’”

However, despite the issues Foster has found when working with people considered Gen Z, she holds no ill will, and even reaches out to younger talent in order to help guide them through the highs and lows of Hollywood.

“I do a lot of reaching out to young actresses. I’m compelled. Because it was hard growing up.”

Speaking with The Guardian, Foster said that young up-and-comers need to learn how to “relax,” though presumably while also vigorously checking their spelling.

“They need to learn how to relax, how to not think about it so much, how to come up with something that’s theirs. I can help them find that, which is so much more fun than being, with all the pressure behind it, the protagonist of the story.”

Jodie Foster Has Taken The Last of Us Star Bella Ramsey Under Her Wing

One young actor that Foster has taken under a wing is The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey. The 20-year-old talent has shot to fame thanks to their performance in the acclaimed video game adaptation, with Foster requesting that Ramsey introduce her at the Elle magazine Women in Hollywood celebration.

“I reached out to Bella, because we’d never met, and said, ‘I want you to introduce me at this thing,’ which is a wonderful event about actors and people in the movies but is also very much a fashion thing. Which means it’s determining who represents us.”

Foster though felt some disappointment towards the event, explaining that, despite organizers trying to bring diversity to the proceedings, all she saw were attendees “still wearing heels and eyelashes.”

“[The organisers] are very proud of themselves because they’ve got every ethnicity, and I’m like, yeah, but all the attendees are still wearing heels and eyelashes. There are other ways of being a woman, and it’s really important for people to see that. And Bella, who gave the best speech, was wearing the most perfect suit, beautifully tailored, and a middle parting and no makeup.”

Jodie Foster can currently be seen leading the latest True Detective series, True Detective: Night Country. Starring alongside Kali Reis, True Detective: Night Country is set in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska, and follows the investigation behind the disappearance of eight men from a research station.

True Detective: Night Country is set to premiere on January 14, 2024, and has been hailed as a return to form for the crime thriller anthology series.
